Acne

Acne is an increasingly prevalent skin condition, which affects both men and women. At AMP clinic we offer evidence based topical treatments for those suffering with mild to moderate symptoms. For those who have severe symptoms and/or evidence of skin scarring we may suggest a referral to a Dermatologist.

Acne is characterized by comedones (more commonly known as whiteheads and blackheads) and is accompanied by pus filled spots. It very often starts at puberty but this may not always be the case and it can manifest later in adult life. It is largely unknown why acne occurs.

The glands, which produce oil are known as sebaceous glands and are sensitive to normal blood levels of certain hormones, which in turn cause excess oil to be produced.  In addition, dead skin cell debris, which needs to be shed from the lining of the hair follicle, remains in situ, causing congestion. Both of these key factors contribute to the onset of blackheads and whiteheads.

In addition, the underlying congestion creates an ideal environment for certain skin bacteria associated with acne, to exist which leads to inflammation and pustules (spots). In addition to the face it may affect the neck, chest, back and the tops of the arms.

At AMP Clinic we are able to recommend a combination of treatments, which may include chemical peels, Diode Light Therapy - blue light wavelength has an anti-bacterial action that is especially effective in treating acne, whilst red light has healing properties and particularly benefits broken skin, as well as treatments with proven cosmeceutical ingredients from Cerepharma 'ClariFort' acne range for maintenance and use at home.

It is important to note that any prescribed regimen to treat acne requires several months to be able to fully assess the level of individual response and we recommend regular clinic reviews.
